The character Battling Burrows in “Broken Blossoms” is more subtle than Nepomuceno (Edgardo Roman), the violent, alcoholic grandfather of Marina (Paola Baldion Fischer), who’s repressed memories of her family’s massacre and hasn’t been quite right since. When Nepomuceno is killed in a landslide, Marina is taken under wing by wheeler-dealer cousin Jairo (Julian Roman, the sole thesp to make an impression), who brings her back to the ruined homestead to reclaim the land. The road trip, recalling similar journeys in Westerns, reps the pic’s best section, showcasing a scarred land controlled by military overseers and brigands. Colombia의 풍경을 볼 수 있어서 좋았던 로드무비. 코끝이 조금 찡해지는 장면도 있지만. 그럭저럭.

두 주인공의 연기의 힘으로만 끌어가야 하는 이런 영화, 하지만 정말 연기가 좋다. 세대갈등, 오해와 불신, 그안에 있는 동지애. One of my favorites from PIFF
원래 문법대로라면 “How I Spent this summer” 라고 하는 것이 맞았겠지만 원제목에서 일부러 러시아어로 “ended” 라는 의미로 썼다고 한다. 이유는, Sergei 가 Pavel 이 너무 naive 하고 제멋대로라며 충고하는 장면에서 이 대사가 나오는데, 이곳 극지대에서 일이 너에게는 한갓 여름에 추억정도 아니냐 라고 비판할때 Sergei 가 문법과 틀리는 대사로 그가 중간계층이라는 것을 표현해 주기 때문이라고 한다. 이유야 어쨌든, 나라면 제목을 “극지대에서 보낸 지난 여름” 이렇게 재미없게 번역하진 않았을 것 같다.
Of Gods and Men 신과 인간 (***)
A drama about Cistercian monks who stand up for their beliefs when confronted by fundamentalists.
극한 상황에 처했을 때, 일반인도 아닌 신부들이, 어떻게 신에 대한 불안과 불신을 표현하고 해결해 가는지 보여주는 영화. 너무 종교적이라 거리감이 있었으나 인간적인 갈등과 신부로서의 당위를 왔다 갔다 하는 극의 의미는 공감이 간다.
Le nom des gens 사랑을 부르는 이름 (****)

프랑스의 과거(식민화 2차대전등) 현재 (인종 종교갈등 등) 의 모든 문제들을 살짝 버무리면서도 이걸 로맨틱 코미디로 만들어내는 그들이 부럽다. 죠스팽까메오!
제목을 왜 “사랑을 부르는 이름” 이라고 번역했는지는 절대 이해 못하겠다. 로맨틱 코미디라고 선전해야 하기때문에 “사랑”을 꼭 넣어야 해서일까? 원래 영화의 주제도 실제 내용도 “사람들의 이름” 이 맞는데. 여하튼 외국영화에 한국제목 만드는 사람들에 대한 나의 불만은 계속.

누군가에 대한 집착, Crush, 질투. 한사람에 대한 두 친구의 경쟁적인 Obsession 에 대한 아주 스타일리쉬한 캐나다 영화. 두 친구가 한명은 여성 한명은 게이 남성임은 그다지 중요한 포인트는 아니라고 보여지지만 그 때문에 영화가 더 흥미를 주는 것은 사실.
또 한번 한국어 제목에 대한 딴지. 미국에서 개봉시에 Heartbeats 라고 지었는지는 모르겠으나 내가 볼땐 영화내용과 원제가 딱 들어 맞는데 그냥 “상상의 사랑” 혹은 “사랑 그리고 상상” 뭐 이정도가 맞지 않았을까?

오랫만에 보는 Catherine Deneuve 와 Gérard Depardieu 가 반갑다. 70년대 프랑스 배경. 전업주부였던 수잔느가 남편이 운영하던 회사를 운영하게 되고 자신의 능력을 발견하며 나중에는 정치일선에 까지 나서게 되는 이야기. 약간은 과장된 연기가 코믹한 영화의 분위기를 반영하는 듯.

모짜르트 [돈지오반니] 오페라 곡에 현대적 가사를 입혀서 뮤지컬 스러운 영화를 만들어 냈다. 이번 PIFF 서 인기가 꽤 많았던 것 같은데 솔직히 내게는 그정도로 대단히 좋지는 않았다. 개인적인 취향 – 뮤지컬영화를 별로 좋아하지 않는- 때문에… 돈지오반니는 자주 영화화된 컨셉이기 때문에 이 영화가 새로운 시도를 했다는 점에서는 흥미롭다.
휘파람을 불고 싶다 / If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle (****)

감독이 이영화를 위해 주인공을 실제 복역경험이 있는 사람을 찾았다고 한다. 사실 중간에 갑자기 극박한 인질극으로 넘어가는 부분이 매끄럽지 못한 점이 있기는 하지만, 이 영화가 계속 머리에서 떠나지 않는다. 그의 두려움, 분노, 긴박함 이 모두가 나는 느껴졌다. Another favorite of mine from PIFF.
또다시 한국어 제목에 딴지. 영화 속에서 이 대사 “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” 은 “내가 하고싶으면 하는거야” 라는 내맘대로 한다는 의미인데…
타인의 뒤뜰 / 3 Backyards (**)

제목그대로 3개의 다른 마당에 사는 세명의 사람의 하루 일상이 이어진 영화. 이웃에 사는 영화배우를 태워주게 되어 한 껏 들뜬 여자. 부인과 싸우고 출장을 떠나려다 비행기가 취소되어 주변을 돌다 절박하게 일자리를 구하는 한 여성을 목격하게 된 남자. 학교 버스를 놓쳐서 뛰어가는 중 아버지가 엄마에게 줄 팔찌선물을 잃어버리고 이상한 남자를 보게된 한 아이.
이야기 하나하나는 잘찍었고 연기도 잘했지만 이 세개의 이야기가 어떻게 연결이 되는 건지, 아니면 하나하나씩이라도 무슨 의미를 지니는지 내 머리로는 이해가 안갔다. 쩝.

현재 사라예보에 사는, 내전후의 보스니아/헤즈코비나 사람들의 종교를 둘러싼 갈등을 한 커플을 통해 보여준다. 종교의 황당함은 내게는 새로운 소식은 아니나, 종교를 가지고 있다고 하는 사람들은 스스로 미치광이와 종교인의 선을 어디에 긋는지 흥미로운 이야기다. 의외로 괜찮았던 영화
13인의 자객 / 13 Assassins (****)
A group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord
오션즈 일레븐과 킬빌을 일본판으로 섞은 것 같은 영화. 미이케 다카시의 다른 영화보다는 잔인함이하지만 당근 그의 영화이기 때문에 평균이상. 어쩌다보니 PIFF 에서 본 유일한 아시아영화가 되었는데 감독의 명성답게 이 영화는 비쥬얼로 말하는 영화이다.

이념과 사상의 차이가 극한이었던 70년대말. 불가리아의 한 영화촬영감독과 그의 가족이 겪는 불합리한 시스템.

줄리엣 비노쉬의 연기는 그녀의 나이만큼 연륜이 묻어난다. 오랫만에 만나는 키아로스타미 감독 영화. 초반의 느낌은 ‘비포 선라이즈’ 같다고 생각했지만 점점 관객을 사실/거짓, 원본/카피 라는 영화의 원래 주제로 몰아가면서 이 커플이 연기인지 아니면 사실인지를 계속 의심하게 만드는 흥미로운 영화다.
영화 제목 번역을 왜 “증명서”라고 했는지 정말 이해가 안간다. 영화를 보면 영화의 주제도 그렇고 “보증된 가짜” 혹은 “확실한 복사본”의 의미인데 말이다. 또다시 짜증나는 한국어 번역제목.
월 스트리트: 머니 네버 슬립스 / Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (**)

올리버스톤 감독과의 대화시간 때문에 본 영화. 굳이 PIFF에서 보지 않아도 될 영화였음. 영화자체는 올리버스톤식 문제제기라기에는 너무 가볍게 다룬 월스트리트 이야기이다. 차라리 문제제기로서는 마이클무어의 “자본주의 러브스토리”가 훨신 강하다. 헐리우드식 재미영화로 봐준다고 해도 반전이 약하며 이런 영화에서 꼭 필요한 속고속이기의 재미가 별로 없다. 영화는 그다지.

“잠수종과 나비”의 배우 Mathieu Amalric 의 감독 주연 영화. 이영화를 보려고 밤기차를 타고 서울로 돌아와야 했던 걸 생각하면 들인 노력에 비해서는 실망스러웠던 영화. 영화에 나오는 프랑스에서 투어를 하는 여성들은 진짜 burlesque 쇼를 하는 사람들이라고 한다.
