EBay to Pull Back From Chinese Market

EBay 가 중국시장에서 발을 빼기로 했다.

EBay Inc. plans to pull back from the fast-growing Chinese market by shutting down its main Web site in China and replacing it with a new site that would be largely run by a Beijing-based Internet company, say people familiar with the matter, in the latest sign of trouble afflicting the onetime Internet star.

The San Jose, Calif., company plans to announce as early as Tuesday that it is taking a 49% stake in the new site in a partnership with online portal and wireless operator Tom Online Inc., these people say. Tom Online would hold a 51% stake. Up till now, eBay had operated its own auction site in China.

중국에서 Alibaba 에게 밀리던 EBay 는 중국 사이트를 폐쇄하고 대신 Tom Online 이 운영하는 사이트로 트래픽을 넘기기로 했다.

대다수 미국의 인터넷 회사들이 최근에 들어서 외국에서 local 회사들에 밀리고 있는 것이 사실이다. Yahoo 도 일본을 제외하고는 다른 곳에서는 제대로 하고 있지 못하며 Google 이 그나마 잘한다고 하지만 Local 에 맞게 사업을 하지 않고 일괄적인 방식을 고집하는 것이 여러곳에서 차질을 빚고 있다.

중국이라는 큰 시장을 접겠다는 결정을 한 것은 EBay 로서는 심각한 결정으로 보여진다. 자신들이 직접 운영하는 것은 힘들겠다고 보고 Local 에서 잘할 파트너에게 넘기면서 지분만 가져가겠다는 형태가 그나마 현재로서는 영리한 결정일 것.

인터넷에서 진정한 Global 한 서비스/회사가 되는 것은 얼마나 힘든 것일까 다시금 생각하게 한다.

언제나 새로운 전시로 몇번을 다시 가도 즐겁고,  일본인 건축가 Yoshio Taniguchi 의 손길로 다시 지어진 건축 또한 멋지다.

이번에는 Manet 의 그 유명한  “The Execution of Maximilian” 을 런던에서 가져와 특별 전시를 하고 있었다.
