Google’s ultimate goal

그동안 이 블로그에서는 Google 이 단순한 검색 서비스가 아닌, 웹을 통한 광고시장을 재편하려는 회사임을 계속 강조해 왔었다. Print-ads, Radio-ads, CSE 등등 여러 각도의 글들을 통하여 내용을 전달해 왔는데, 오늘 WSJ 기사가 Google의 이러한 전략을 제대로 정리해 주고 있다.

Google Tests New Ad Offerings – But Will Advertisers Follow? (WSJ, Dec. 14, 2006, subscribers only)

Many consumers know Google primarily for its popular search engine. But nearly all of its revenue, which some analysts estimate will exceed $10 billion this year, comes from advertisements it places alongside search results and other content on its own Web sites and those of partners. Thanks to those activities, Google is the largest seller of advertising on the Internet, according to research firm eMarketer Inc.

The ultimate goal, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters in October, is to let advertisers buy a broad menu of ad types and distribution through Google’s single Web-based interface. “The long-term fantasy is we walk up to you and you give us, say, $10 million and we’ll completely allocate it for you” across different media and ad types, he said in an interview last month. All types of ads can be made more effective, for instance by targeting them to consumers more likely to be interested in them, Mr. Schmidt said. By tackling that problem, Google expects to expand its share of global advertising sales.

 

Google 이 원하는 대로 ‘모든 매체의 광고를 살 수 있는 Web 플랫폼’을 만드는 것이 최종 목표라면 기존의 광고 Agency 들은 자신들의 위치를 크게 위협받게 된다. 물론 지금은 Google 은 Agency 들과 싸울 생각도 없고 그들은 계속 남아 있을 것이라고 하지만, Web 을 통하여 middlemen 의 간섭을 줄이고 직접 거래가 이루어 지도록 하는 모델이 더욱 efficient 하게 될 것임에는 틀림없다. Media Agency 들의 역할이 없어지지는 않겠지만 지금의 media-mix 역할 보다는 다른 부분에 집중해야만 할 것이다.

Anyhow,  천정이 어딘지 모르고 사업을 확대해 가는 Google이 단지 인터넷 회사들의 경쟁상대/Big brother가 아님을 모든 media 관련 회사들은 깨달아야 할 것.

• Picture, Drama: “Babel,” “Bobby,” “The Departed,” “Little Children,” “The Queen“

5작품중 4개를 본 개인적 견해는 어느 하나도 확실하게 최고라고 할만하지 못하다. 모두들 2% 부족하다. 굳이 꼽자면 “The Queen” 이 그나마 낫다고 본다.

• Picture, Musical or Comedy: “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Dreamgirls,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Thank You for Smoking”

아직 개봉하지 않은 Dreamgirls 이지만 엄청난 사전 마케팅과 리뷰를 보건대 상을 탈 것이 거의 확실하다. Dreamgirls 은 다이아나 로스로 유명한 Supremes 의 이야기를 영화화한 작품. “The Devil Wears Prada”가 언급되는 게 잘 이해가 안간다. 물론 재미있고 유쾌한 영화였으나 메릴 스트립이 아니었으면 이 영화는 B급 코미디에 불과하지 않나? 개인적으로는 Borat 이나 Little Miss Sunshine 이 타야한다고 생각하는데 물론 Dearmgirls 를 본 후에는 생각이 달라질 수도….

과거에는 한 카테고리에 한명이 다른 두작품으로 두번 nominated 된 경우가 없었다. 올해는 특이하게도 감독상의 클린트 이스트우드, 드라마부문 주연남자배우에 디카프리오가 두개의 작품으로 두번 nominated 되었다.

• Actress, Drama: Penelope Cruz, “Volver”; Judi Dench, “Notes on a Scandal”; Maggie Gyllenhaal, “Sherrybaby”; Helen Mirren, “The Queen”; Kate Winslet, “Little Children”

Volver 를 봐야지 하면서 아직 못본 관계로 Penelope Cruz 에 대한 평가는 힘들다. 하지만 “The Queen” 의 Helen Mirren 을 누르기는 힘들 듯.

• Actor, Drama: Leonardo DiCaprio, “Blood Diamond”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Departed”; Peter O’Toole, “Venus”; Will Smith, “The Pursuit of Happyness”; Forest Whitaker, “The Last King of Scotland”

디카프리오가 두개의 작품이나 주연상의 대상이 됬다는 것은 좋을 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있다. 보지는 못했지만 “The Last King of Scotland” 에서의 Forest Whitaker 의 연기는 굉장했다고 한다.

• Actress, Musical or Comedy: Annette Bening, “Running With Scissors”; Toni Collette, “Little Miss Sunshine”; Beyonce Knowles, “Dreamgirls”; Meryl Streep, “The Devil Wears Prada”; Renee Zellweger, “Miss Potter”

메릴 스트립을 누가 누를 수 있을까?

• Actor, Musical or Comedy: Sacha Baron Cohen, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”; Johnny Depp, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”; Aaron Eckhart, “Thank You for Smoking”; Chiwetel Ejiofor, “Kinky Boots”; Will Ferrell, “Stranger than Fiction”

Sacha Cohen 이 의도하지 않은 Borat 의 성공으로 과연 주연상까지 탈 수 있을지 기대된다.

내년 1월 15일 발표되는 Golden Globe 는 Oscar 의 전초전 적인 성격이다. Golden Globe 는 영화 이외에도 TV show 에 대해서도 시상을 하는데, 최근 몇년간 Lost와 Desperate Housewives가 나누어 상을 타갔었다. 올해는 Heroes 와 Grey’s Anatomy 가 어떻게 될지 궁금하다.
