Baidu to Raise  Web-Search Stakes With Japan Entry (WSJ, Dec. 4, 2006, subscribers only)

Still, Japan is sure to be a challenge. Baidu has long said that its Chinese roots give it an edge against foreign competitors in China. In Japan, Baidu is not only foreign but also far less well-known than its U.S. rivals. Moreover, some analysts say Baidu has benefited from being seen as cooperative by China’s Internet regulators, who put strict limits on Web content and who have sometimes blocked access in China to Google and other Baidu competitors.

지금까지 중국 기업들이 기술분야에서 해외 진출에 성공한 케이스 들은 대부분 저임금으로 이득을 보는 제조업 분야였다.  시스코에 대항하겠다는 Huawei Technologies Co. 나 IBM 의 PC division 을 사들인 Lenovo Group Ltd. 가 그 예.

중국 인터넷 시장이 크고 있다고는 하지만, 인터넷이 더 발달한 나라에서 3등만 한다고 해도 크기가 훨씬 더 크기 때문에 Baidu 로서는 내부가 포화가 되기 전에 해외도 같이 병행하겠다는 전략이 나쁘지많은 않다. 게다가 일본을 그 타겟으로 삼은 것도, 일본의 infrastructure 발전 정도에 비해서 서비스의 발전정도가 상대적으로 낮기 때문. 즉, 아직 기회가 있다고 본 것이다.

하지만, 최초의 시도가 될 중국 인터넷 서비스의 일본 진출이 과연 성공이 될지 잘 모르겠다. 중국어를 못하는 관계로 Baidu 를 써본 적도 없어서 서비스에 대한 평가도 힘들다. 다만 일본시장은 상대적으로 미국에 비해 매우 가능성이 있다는 것은 짚고 싶다.

한국의 인터넷 서비스들도 몇년 전부터 해외진출에 많은 시도를 하고 있으나 온라인 게임을 제외하고는 딱히 성공을 거둔 예가 없다. 그만큼 서비스는 해당 국가와 언어 문화에 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있는 터라, 말만 바꾼다고 해결되지 않기 때문.

Baidu 가 어떤 방식으로 수면위로 부상할지 궁금해 진다.

I like Tony Scott’s movies. There, I said it.

Say whatever you want to say about Tony Scott but he never forgets that movies are in the end entertainment. And he always delivers it. He doesn’t try to be sort of ‘a serious director’ like his brother, Ridley Scott (oh don’t get me wrong, I love SOME of Ridley Scott’s movies), and always knows what he can do best. You’ll get exactly what you expect: the intensive visual effect, fast editing, powerful chasing scenes and the thrill that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The hi-techy scenes and editing reminded me of Enemy of the State but Deja Vu is more of a Sci-Fi/Thriller than conspiracy related. Whenever movies deal with time travel, my brain is screwed. So many questions arise. “How come the memo he left on the fridge can still be there if this is a new future?” “What if one didn’t die? Should 2 identities exist together?” and goes on and on…. But all these meaningless questions are side entertainment of watching well-made blockbuster thrillers.

I’m not normally crazy about Bruckheimer’s ‘ove-the-top’ production but in this movie, Tony Scott’s “speed” shined more. Denzel Washington being the main actor doesn’t hurt.

It’s just a pure entertainment and a little bit of brain gaming. Isn’t it worth 2 hrs of my life?
