The Decemberists – The Crane Wife
Although I owned and liked their Picaresque album, it wasn’t my favorite to be honest.
Their new album “The Crane Wife”, released in Oct., just blew me away. It is simply astonishing.
My favorite track is 12 minute-long “The Island”. This is a sophisticated, complete progressive rock tune which reminds me of 70’s ELP or YES. I didn’t think it is possible to have 70’s progressive sounds in 2006. And 70’s progressive rock is in my heart and always will be.
Also love “The Crane Wife 3″ and “Yankee Bayonet”, both of which have catchy folk ballad feel.
“The Perfect Crime #2″ has a polished Steely Dan sound.
The lyrics are complicated and ultra literary as always. I know some will not like this album and rather prefer Picaresque. But this one just caught my ears. Without a doubt, one of this year’s best albums for me. Maybe it’s because it is produced by Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie? (they are my best group in this millennium)
